When you don't have a regular cycle (every month) or every 28 days. I have an irregular period -- I only had an average of 2-5 periods a year.

An irregular period is when your menstrual cycle is not exactly 28 days or exactly 30 days etc. It means if I had my period today, i might ge it again in 3 weeks or 5 weeks or who knows? Most women can keep track of their cycles by counting the days inbetween periods, since that amount of time is always the same. Hence, it's called 'irregular' if that amount of time is often/always different.
A woman can have irregular periods for some reason and then have regular periods later. (Such as if she is just starting her period, or oral contraceptives, or under a lot os stress, malnourished, etc.)

A menstrual cycle is 'normally' the same evey month and averages every 28 days lasting 3-7 days with flow that starts small, gets to be more then drops off again. This cycle repeats and repeats. It is said to be "irregular" if any part of that changes.....such as; 28 days then 40 days then 16 days OR you have it for 5 days then 1 day then 17 days OR you blled like a river, then the next month just spotting etc.....

The opposite of a regular one, it's one that you don' tknow when it comes because it's different in length every month.
