I am an interpreter in a school. As Lyris said, an interpreter is obligated to not censor anything said or signed when interpreting. As in the US we have a strong code of ethics in Canada. When interpreting, the swear words do come off my hands or out of my mouth. If a teacher hears the interpreter saying this then then they need to address it with the Deaf student as it is what they signed. As the interpreter "I" did not swear, the student did. Likewise, if the Deaf student saw a swear coming off my hands, s/he would report to the teacher that the other student swore...s/he knows it was not the interpreter. The only time I report anything to the principal is when as an interpreter I become aware that a minor's health or welfare is at risk. It is very oppressive to Deaf people, children included, to only interpret the 'nice' things. Aside from being morally wrong, It also prevents them from learning how to manage the real world and deal with social interactions, even when uncomfortable. Interpreters are taught this early on. If someone is not comfortable with these responsibilities, they should consider a different profession.
