Indie

The term indie is short for "independent" and refers to artistic creations outside the commercial mainstream, without the support of a major record label, major movie studio, or other source of a large budget. For example,

Indie Publisher

It is short or slang for independent. As in an independent film or an independent music label. It usually is a project that does not have major corporate funding. A good example of an indie band would probably be Sonic Youth when they first started out. And a good example of an indie movie would probably be Michael Moore's first film/ documentary "Roger & ME".

It means independant. In music it is bands/singers who do not have a record deal/ aren't with a label. In movies it means a movie that wasn't made with a major production company.

More than that though, Indie has come to mean a certain style of music and films, more artsy and not mainstream. An artistic creation without a major budget pretty much. Hope it helps.

Indie pop is a genre of alternative rock music that originated in the United Kingdom in the mid-1980s, with its roots in Scottish post-punk bands on the Postcard Records label in the early '80s (Josef K and Orange Juice) and the dominant UK independent band of the mid-'80s, The Smiths. Indie pop was inspired by punk's DIY ethic and related ideologies, and it generated a thriving fanzine, label, and club and gig circuit. Indie pop differs from indie rock to the extent that it is more melodic, less abrasive, and relatively angst-free.

short for independent. like an artist that is indie may have a record deal but may not with a major multi-million dollar label. those artists are indie. and, frankly, in a lot of cases are more respected-i'd respect artists for their art, not how much money they can make off of us.

indie music is called indie because when the first indie bands started out that kind of music was unpopular so those bands could only get signed to independant (indie) record lables

It means independent. If you're referring to music or film, it means that it is isn't backed by one of the major production companies, i.e. Universal. Instead, it's produced by an independent music/film company. It tends to be synonymous with a smaller, less-commercial company.
