Democracy, because that's a government run for the people, by the people.

Monarchies are generally run by one person, and since ultimate power corrupts ultimately, monarchs can get greedy and selfish. Look at Henry VIII. Ok, that was a long time ago, but, well, he's one example of a royal fatcat. His waistline grew with his greed. Not all people are like that, but judging from some recent documentaries, he was a nice guy 'till the power and money went to his head. Sounds pretty familiar and true throughout history.

One person judging what's best for the people has a nice long history of not working too terribly well. They sit in their palaces, not knowing a thing about what's really happening to those who work hard to keep the economy going. Marie Antoinette was another notorious royal spender...and look where she ended up.

Monarchy can also lead to Theocracy(religious rule), if the royal in charge decides to make all those in his or her country follow the same beliefs as they do.

And theocracies are a very bad idea. Unless you're prepared to believe the way the government tells you to, it's probably not a good idea for you to live in one. People who don't believe like everyone else in a theocracy has three choices. Convert, leave, or face execution for defying whatever deity said theocracy believes in. You can lead a person to a religious service, but you can't make them believe in their hearts. Pretty soon, people will get fed up and there's a revolution.

At least with a democracy, even if it's imperfect, it's at least run by the people it governs. No deity or corrupt royal dynasty telling people how to live and what will or won't get changed. The people decide what needs get taken care of when they need to be taken care of, not when the rich are ready to cough up their fortunes to help out.

Winston Churchill said "There is no good form of government; Democracy being the lesser of all evils."
