You dont need to pay for every song you put on it. Just copy all of your mp3 right into iTunes.
The nanos are ok, but the video iPods are much better, and dont cost that much more. Also, if you do get an iPod, get it from apples website. That way you can do a free engraving!
You might also want to check out the creative zens, they are really nice too, and they have a radio bilt in.

With the new (2nd gen) ipod nanos, you don't get iTunes included - you have to download the new version (iTunes 7) from Apples website. However, 35mb is a pretty big file to download unless you have broadband!
The 2nd gen have an aluminium case, instead of the plastic case that the original was made of.
You don't have to buy songs from anywhere online - once you have a CD, you can convert the songs on the CD to mp3 using iTunes (or Windows Media Player).
It's worth remembering that the quality of the mp3 will affect how many songs you can store. For example, an mp3 encoded at 128kpbs (good enough quailty) will take up more space than the same encoded at 64kbps (not so good quailty). You can change these settings in iTunes.
The iPods are easier to use than Creative's (imho), but unlike the Creative Zen Photos, they don' have replaceable batteries, so in a year or two when your iPod doesn't hold its charge, that's it pretty much finished!

1. ipod nano's are great. probably the coolest consumer product ever made.
2. no. you can upload songs from your CD collection or any other source of music or mp3's into iTunes, and then synch from there. Purchasing from itunes/apple is only one way to get music.

the nano is good but it is small, easy to loose, and scratches easily. If you choose to obay the law and buy songs from itunes or if you buy cds then you just download itunes and plug your ipod in. It will then proced to put all the songs in your itunes library onto your ipod. then eject your ipod, plug in you headphones and enjoy!

using the itunes CD you will get with the nana, or (download it from apple.com) then use a free thing called ''lime wire'' and download all your free music from there...
also using windows media player, 'rip' all your favourite songs off your own Cd's and all you do is (knowing where your music is), is open 'add file to library' in itunes, select the music folders, and the will all magically transfer over to your iPod....
