It depends on the age group of the children and where you are. However, it is best if you have set up some ground rules in advance. Tell the kids how you expect them to behave and what that looks like. "When we are at the zoo, you must stay in sight of your parent helper." Remember to tell the kids what to do, not what not to do- instead of don't run, say walking feet only. "Don't yell" turns into "Use an indoor voice", that kind of thing. Also, set up a signal to get their attention. Common ones are: "Give me Five" which means hands up, voices off or a clapping echo- you clap a pattern and the kids echo the pattern and then give you their attention.

Once you have their attention, then you need to keep it. Have some game type things you can do. things like "Do this, Do That" it is a Simeon says game. It goes really fast. You start and say do this and the kids do it, but if you say do that, then they aren't supposed to. Go fast, after a couple minutes have the kids lead the game. Another game kids love is Twenty Questions.

Having a journal for the kids with questions for them to answer, also helps keep the kids focused.

Probably the biggest help is to have enough adult volunteers to keep the kids under control. Never leave without an adult to watch over your behavior problem children.

Sit them all down and say you want help from them. Tell them that "we have a problem" (not Houston) (think one up) and say each child must think of a solution, when they have one to put up their hand, hear the child's answer and ask the group what they think, one at a time. They immediately unite and discuss. Tell them that as soon as you have a reasoned answer you will continue with the trip and can have lunch. Calm is restored. That's the theory anyway. Keeping a group of small children together takes a very fit teacher. It is best to have one helper to about 5 children. That way you can immediately spot an escapee and round him (it is invariably a him) up and return him to the group. Have a nice day. Good luck.

Have a signal such as hands in the air as a visual sign or a whistle as a sound signal. Make the meaning of these signals very clear before the trip and reinforce on the journey. The signal will mean that everyone is to stop what they are doing straight away before continuing with the visit.
Set your rules and boundaries before the trip so the children know what is expected of them & explain what may happen if they fail to conform. Ie the trip may be cut short.

Take a whistle with you or some other item which you can bang loudly. Tell the children at the beginning that if they hear a certain sound (which you explain to them) they are to be quiet straightaway. That it is very important that they do this.

Practice it a few times (in a lighthearted game). Then when you are satisfied proceed with the trip.

Grab their attention and get them all to sing along to a couple of songs. Then hand out some colouring books and crayons. Also read to them (only if your not driving that is!).
