If you are looking at replacing or purchasing a heat pump, it might be enlightening to you to do a little web research. I can share this with you though. I have a Lennox..(13.6 SEER) state of the art, top of the line heatpump. If I had it to do over, I would go with a straight cool system with strip heat. Yes, the power company rebate was nice to get, but the cost of the heatpump was such that I could have spent less overall on the purchase, get heat when I want it (not wait 2 hours) and my electricity consumption would have been about the same. Plus, a straight cool system is designed more simply resulting in less cost at the time of repair. Just some food for thought.
Have to keep in mind: Cooling cycle. Compressor and 2 fans run
Heating cycle: Compressor and 2 fans run unless in defrost then compressor runs, 2 fans run AND a heatstrip energizes.
Straight cool : Cool cycle - Compressor runs, 2 fans.
Heat cycle - 1 fan and heatstrip energized.
So much I could tell you...but the main point is this. Talk to some folks who own them and get their opinion.
