I'm referring to having shut downs for more than just a day or two.

If so, do you have to burn vacation days to keep from losing too much money over the shutdown?

My employer shuts down for about 10 days over Christmas. I have to save 5 days holiday to allow for full wages over the 2 weeks. Having said that. the company operates a 24/7 machine breakdown service and i spent 3 days last year working in a frozen food company putting a machine back to rights. I was well paid, but would have prefered to have my holiday. It is likely that this Christmas will be the same scenario and i expect to be called out at least once over my hol. Hope this answers your question

I work for Wal-Mart. Our particular store is open 364 days a year. They close at 6:00 Christmas Eve and are closed Christmas Day, all of the other holidays (Thanksgiving, Easter, New Year's Day, Labor Day, Memorial Day) they are open until midnight. I usually end up working at least a five hour shift on a holiday as the pay is double!

I work for a hosp so no, but my dad worked for someone who did. They shut down for a couple of weeks. He actually applied for unimployment for that period. It is technically a temporary layoff.
