i've tried craigslist.com and i dont like, are there any other places i can try?

rent.com but its about the same. most advertised apartments are big complex things. if you want something more interesting i suggest you get an anonymous place and sign a lease for a year and that will give you time to figure out where you want to live that isn't advertised everywhere. a year isn't that long.

Look at the classified ads in the newspaper of the city you want to live in.

Where exactly are you looking in CA? I would first start at local newspapers. They usually have the best.
