I think there's only 3 ways a Japanese would handle that.

A) Think you're a psycho, ignore your comment and quickly leave the scene so as not to be attacked by said psycho.

B) Apologize for being rude and offending you.....Or technically apologize for doing something that YOU feel is offensive and rude with out knowing so.

C) Consider your comment a challenge, grab you by the hair and head butt you in the nose.

I guess A would be the most common action.
B depends on the person I guess. If they're good people they may do this but not likely....C) would probably be the younger generation.

i wouldn't say that phrase. I'd just smile back or just stare back at them giving them a little bit of their own medicine. Proper parenting should have taught them that staring is rude regardless. The Japanese have an expression asking the starer if they'd like a Kodax or something to that effect.

If you do choose to use that expression in your question and they decide to form a negative opinion of all foriengers because you were a jack*ss, that really is more their own small-mindedness that they can't distinguish the actions of one jack*ss gaijin from the millions of others.

What can I add to these excellent answers?

Get used to the staring, and enjoy it, it can be fun. I love it myself, most of the time, with the right reaction and a smile, it can open the door to many pleasant interactions with locals, and in my case, many long-lasting friendships...Where else -except China- does a middle aged bald guy with a beer belly get the chance to be the centre of all the attention?

If you aren't in a big city and someone stares at you, just shrug it off and go about your business. It'll happen frequently. Even with the kids. Just ignore them and go about your day.

They would most likely look away from you. Then thanks to your actions they would begin forming a more negative attitude towards foriegners effecting every foriegner they were to meet after you.

The exact same way anyone else would react: they'd find you rude and immature.

Don't worry. They would only think they found a stardust by accident.
