Now I know there are always exceptions but listen. We always need to buy something to make us happy. Weather its that huge SUV that gets 10 miles per gallon or that huge house that costs a fortune in money and resources to heat and cool. We always have to go to the mall and buy new clothes because we "need" them and our old clothes don't make us happy anymore. I am not like this and I'm tired of being around people who are. When will this end? Probably never since our economy is based on the suffering of others. Just think about it. Will it ever stop?

I think that's the mentality in big cities and wealthy suburbs everywhere. You might try moving to somewhere that places less emphasis on such things. I know L.A. and Long Island and Orange County are definitely guilty of those things you speak of (having lived in all three) but if you're sick of it seek out a place that isn't. There ARE places in America less focused on material things. It's really everywhere though, London is just as bad. There are just a lot more opportunities in cities and places of wealth for advertisers and marketing people to target people. Everywhere I go in L.A. there are TV screens (even over the freeway) in the lines at grocery stores TV's advertising things, it's just FORCED on people that they just MUST have this newest model blah blah blah. I hate it too, trust me. I'm like you. I don't even have a TV anymore.

True, there are many people that spend just for the sake of spending. But which country is at the top of the food chain? Which country sets the standards? And why do you think that is? Be glad you are allowed to live in a country where you can pursue these things, and not where you are told what to do and how much you can own. (if you don't like it, move)
Also, it just sounds to me like you are jealous of those successful people who went out and did something.
