Someone at work spreads lies about other workers to bring them down and make themselves look better.I know this is common practice among certain types but this exceeds any acceptable tolerance.is there any legal action trhat can be taken against an individual outside of involving upper management,that course has been taken with no results. Could they be sued?

Yes, but it might be difficult to prove. It is called...i think slander or public defaming or something like that. Despite this, proof of the action(s) might be very difficult to prove, and the cost of the suit might not be reasonable.

They can be sued for slander, but would have to prove their reputation was actually damaged. Has the person being talked about considered changing jobs?

Sure can, but it is a civil issue. I believe it is called slander. There isn't that great a burden of proof in civil court and they can even award a monetary compensation. I would also see if your workplace has rules of conduct, my job does and we aren't allowed to gossip, if we get caught we are fired.

i guess that person can sue for emotional trauma, that is if the person is unable to work or perform his/her duties to the best of there quality.
