Everytime I try to start a conversation with a girl, it always ends up being a pathetic topic. Some of these are shoes and shirts.

I know a way to get a girl is talking to her, but how can I get a conversation going, if I don't know what she likes, if I can't hold one for long, or get a great topic going?

For previous answerers: Yes, this involves the same girl from the questions before, not the one on the bus.

Hey, Metal, she ain't stupid.

If she was in honors science, english, reading, history, and regulars math, then why would she be stupid?

I got her for those classes.

If y'all wanna know the seating...

In science, she's at the front of the room and I'm in the back.

In engligh, she's in the clumpus (group) in the back, and I'm in the front.

In reading, she's nearly across the room.

In history, she's right in front of me.

In math, she's a knight's move away (two up, one right).

So I could start by passing notes.

Just start with something really basic. You say you're in most of her classes. Well, then there must be a teacher you commonly dislike/like. Just say something like, "(fill in the blank) was really boring/interesting today, or talk about hw, like "i dont understand what we have to do for (fill in the blank)" or "(fill in the blank) is gonna take really long tonight".
Or if you have any mutual friends, you can talk about them, or embarassing stories, etc...
As you talk more, even if it is just about basic things, things should get easier.

Ask open-ended questions that make her think a little. Such as, if she could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be? Ask what she thinks of a particular movie, actor/actress, band, song... Tell a joke.

Good conversation will flow naturally if you don't freak.

As a girl..I'm always just worried I sound stupid- and self-centered..not that I follow the rules of most girls in all that social complexity they get all worked up about.
A back-and-forth conversation should just be comfortable, even if all your talking about it getting sunburned.

People love to talk about themselves, especially if you act interested. If she says anything about herself, reflect it back, eg "I'm tired." Look at her and say,"You're tired?" She'll probably tell you more about it, eg "I was up late studying." You can ask what she was studying or why it kept her up, or just look at her and say, "mm-hm." "Mm-hm" is a great phrase for getting somebody to tell you more. It is important to look at her when making these vague remarks; that is how she'll know you are listening. You can keep on asking questions or just saying mm-hm. She'll end up thinking you are a great conversationalist because you are listening to her. If she asks you something, keep the answer fairly short, then get back to what she thinks.
You will eventually get to talk about yourself, of course; but to make a good impression, be a good listener.

Well, besides talking about clothes, find out something that she is totally into, like sports, or shopping. If that doesnt work, talk about family. A good way to get a conversation going is to talk about old times, like childhood stuff...like ask her if she remembers old shows, or toys...that will spark up memories, and get you both talking!
