The real reason that people like a higher thread count is the way it feels. Most regular department stores will sell between 150-400 threadcount, and sometimes they will have little swatches that you can feel. Egyptian cotton with an extremely high threadcount will cost you a fortune but feel like heaven.
If you want something that will feel smooth and cool when you get into bed, last a long time, and won't break the bank, I would suggest 300 threadcount. My favorite reason for having a high threadcount is that you can throw the sheet up in the air and make it float down onto the bed like a parachute. Cheaper sheats won't do that.

I like the higher threadcounts, preferably over 250. The higher the thread count, the softer the sheet. Also the material can make a big difference. I have a set of Egyptian cotton, I think they are like 300 tc. They are so soft and it feels smooth. I also have some that are Sateen, they are nice. I like to shop at the Springmaid outlet, I can afford the higher thread counts that way. The problem is that once you get used to sleeping on higher thread count sheets, it is hard to sleep on cheaper ones.

Here's a summary that I copied from the article in my source:
Below 250: It is possible to get good-quality sheets that have a low thread count. Look for Egyptian cotton or American-grown Pima cotton, which are both fine, long-staple varieties.
250 to 400: Better-quality sheets (that is, those that are surprisingly soft and long-lasting) can be found in this range. Unless you’re particularly persnickety, you should find a set that suits you and won’t break the bank.
400 Plus: Elite sheets usually carry a thread count between 400 and 600. It’s possible to squeeze 1,000 threads into a square inch, but expect to pay a premium for a high-count sheet from a reputable maker.

400 and up but be sure it's 100% cotton. Read the label carefully. They cost more but they are well worth the money. A good place to buy these sheets is a store called Tuesday Morning. When washing these sheets, do not use bleach. The bleach (even a small amount) will break down the fabric.

The higher the thread count, the better quality of the sheet. I like 300 thread count. Also look for Pima cotton. If you like soft....get flannel.

I would never buy less than 300tc. The higher the thread count the smoother they are. I only use 1000 thread count egyptian cotton. Very expensive so watch for sales. But worth it!!

It depends...do you want cheap or comfy? The higher the thread count, the better and the more they will cost...try Egyptian cotton 1000 thread count or more for the best sheets...
