The smear tests are important not only to rule out any chances of cervical cancer in the mother, but they become necessary for the well being of the new born as he/she would be traveling down the mother’s birth canal, which may at times be infected or carrying some germs which can be potentially dangerous for the new born. Remember to get the smear tests done once you reach the 36th week, unless you decide to get the delivery by a caesarian section which will eliminate the newborn to travel the birth canal.

I think you need a new OBGYN. Pap's are suppose to be done once a year and are always done at first prenatal appointments. I'm 13 weeks pregnant and have had two. They will do another later on to check for Hep B which is manditory in most states and checking for other STD's. If you OB doesn't do one find another. He/She is not being safe.

The doctor should do a pap smear on your first prenatal visit as part of the other testing. It's routine, if you haven't had one recently. Congratulations!

They normally do a papsmear at your 12 wk appt and then one at and/or after your 36th wk for the strep B culture. Pap smears do not harm the baby. Defintly make sure they do the strep B so that you can make sure that you get antibiotics if you need them. Ask your OB/GYN.
