As usual First you need to let us people know what area and state you live in.
The Sunset Garden Books,Ortho Garden Books has Each state broken down in growing Zones.
Then further broken down per Soils, Condition weather,Then also
Elevations all takes account of what type of Sod to plant in what areas.
Then the next things looked at is type of Exposure, Trees,Shaded areas, High traffic areas.
Pets use on grass, kids, Adult play area:
1) Horse Shoes,BBQ, Partys, Pools,Spas,Pounds:
2) If not shaded then is it exposed to High Heat, Sun,Cool Dampness from Sea Breaze, Most Air from Fog or Extreme Smog Condtions like LA,CA Basin. This areas has High stress on Lawn also.
So,its very important to give better discreptions locations on your questions for help for Sod.
There is Tall Fescues, Kentucky Blue Grass, plus meny other types that take little water to lots of water.
This deepends on Early Spring Planting,Fall plantings.
So,good Luck hope this helps.

Too bad you didn't include your location, but if you live in the
southern states, right now is a very good time. The sod wont
go through a lot of heat stress or require lots of water. It may
not look all that great during the winter but it will root in and be
ready to take off next spring. DO NOT forget to water every now
and then if you don't get any rainfall.

It depends where you live but spring or fall would be best. The fall is usually better because the roots can get started, go dormant over the winter and then grow more strong in the spring before the sun starts torching it if you live in a hot climate.

Grass seed is always best in the fall but you can do it anytime with less positive results.

I think the best time is after the oppresive summer heat is over, very late summer, or very early fall, so you have enough time for the grass to establish roots before winter (if it freezes in your area)....you will get such a big headstart over the folks that plant in the spring, you wont believe it

Believe it our not fall is a real good time to do it. You just want the sod to take before it freezes.

Best time is when the weather is warming up so that cells in the plant are actively growing.
if you want to speed it up, buy some cutting liquid or powder and mix it up in water and spray onto lnewly planted lawn.

Keep the water up to it for two weeks, and fertilise lightly after roots are formed.

just like most things organic....springtime. when sodding a lawn, also remember.....water the living daylights out of it for the first month. you'll use a ton of water, but it won't fade away and die.

If you do it in Autumn you won't get loads of weeds coming through - but it won't grow as fast as in spring
