The rates for that week are some of the worst Sunday-Thursday rates I have ever seen...There must be several events going on at the same time to drive up rates that much...
Mandalay Bay is sold out for those nights according to their web site...
I ran a check with my favorite LV travel sites and came up with the following rates for you...
Tropicana - $135 - This is not one of my favorite hotels(by a long shot) but it does have a good location, for your needs...The pool area is very nice...
Hooters - $164 - A couple of blocks East of theTropicana and maybe a 10 minute walk to the Excalibur, where you catch the free monorail to Mandalay Bay..I have not stayed at this hotel since Hooters took over from the San Remo...
Luxor - $186 - next door to Mandalay Bay, easy access via the monorail.I like the Luxor, very unique hotel...the tower rooms are a little larger, but I kind of like the Pyramid rooms...
MGM - $233 - 5 minute walk to monorail, that would be from the entrance, it might be a 10 minute walk from your room to the entrance...The MGM is huge...check in can be a nightmare, if your timing is bad, hey it's a hotel with 6,000 rooms what do you expect...
If you have a car you can save a few bucks.
Orleans - $88 - Located at 4500 W Tropicana/ 2.41 miles from Mandalay Bay, a 5 min drive from Orleans according to Map Quest, in my experience it all depends on the time of day.. You're not making that drive in 5 minutes during rush hour...Orleans is my choice as the best value in Las Vegas...The rooms here are really nice and 50% larger than the average room in LV...The Orleans has everything you could want in a hotel and more...their web site http://www.orleanscasino.com the Orleans will "price match" any online room rate you find...phone-1-800-675-3267
South Coast - $84 - I have not been to this one yet, but, friends tell me it's very nice...It's located 5.91 miles(9 minutes)>mapquest again< from MB, it would be an easy drive as South Coast is right on Las Vegas Blvd S. just further south than MB..
Luxor would be the most convenient - Tropicana would not be too bad, except I find it hard to recommend a hotel I just don't like...The Orleans is a great place, if it were me that's where I would stay, but, I have to admit I'm biased ...South Coast is an option, all of the Coast properties are well run...
my favorite travel sites to check LV room rates
http://www.travelworm.com
http://www.vegas.com
http://www.i4vegas.com
I would always call the hotel directly and see if they will price match the online rate you find...Give you more options that way...

I know someone who went to a trade show last year at the Mandalay Bay last year for work in the first week of May and he and his wife stayed at the Mandalay Bay and absolutely loved it. If your going for work, then the company pays for the expenses so prices don't matter. I myself did not stay at the Mandalay Bay, the has a lot to offer. If you are not going for work, I still think that the Mandalay Bay isn't that expensive and it sounds like a fun place to stay.

There are a ton of little hotels around the Mandalay Bay. If you are looking for cheap there is this place called the Golden Palm hotel and casino and they are cheap but remember you get what you pay for. I would recommend checking the Excalibur and the Tropicana, maybe even Hooters Hotel. Those are all pretty reasonable. The Luxor is a little bit more expensive, as well as the Monte Carlo, MGM and Mandalay itself.

I would try the Excalibur or the Tropicana and check their hotel websites directly. I just stayed at the Trop for less than $50 a night in October. It was clean just not all brand new. It is very close to where your trade show is and they have a free tram that runs there from other MGM/Grand owned properties.
Also, a few times a week I would check rates after I booked and every time the rate went down I called back and asked for and got the cheaper rate. I ended up with an upgraded room $30 a night cheaper than when I originally booked.
