I read a help file online which says that you may claim the 500 maternity grant if you recieve child tax credit at a rate higher than the family element.
I recieve a family element and a child element, does that count?
Or is there a special child tax credit rate higher than the family rate that I don't know about?

i found this on the sure start maternity grant page it a link to a pdf form for the grant that you can print off and it says this in the section where its says who can apply

child tax credit at a rate higher than the family element from April 2006 to April 2007 this means a child tax credit rate of £548 a year or more, or £1096 a year or more if you have a baby under one

i know its all confusing but get a form and fill it out the worst they can say is no and you can apply from 11 weeks before your due date and up to 3 months after the birth of your child

hope this helps a little and here's the link and apply it takes only a few Min's and you may be in-titled to some help good luck!!!!

The surestart grant (non repayable) is £500 to all those who are eligible. Go to your local social security office and have a chat with the people there . If you give them your details and all that you are claiming then they will be able to tell you whether you are entitled to this or not. As with any kind of benefit things can sometimes get a little complicated so its best to seek the advice of experts. If you can claim you will be given a form to fill out which your community midwife will be more than happy to sign any time after your 29th week of pregnancy

I am a tax preparer what state do you live in. On the federal tax return you can earn a child tax credit and the earned income credit if you meet all the qualifications plus your income is within the correct range. I have never heard of a maternity grant.

All you can do is try for the maternity grant its simple go to the job centre and ask for the form make sure you have your matb 1form (i cant remember if that's the right name but you can get it off the doctor or midwife after 5 months i think it is)
send them a copy of it with a couple of details then they will get back with your answer.
You should get something just make sure you apply soon because they can mess you around!
(well isn't that what job centres are here for to annoy us!)
Good Luck

I claimed it for my second child (may 2005) because I was a single mum, I had a good salary but paid nursery fees, so my tax credits were quite high. Its easy to claim, I just had to get my health visitor to sign the paperwork. So go for it. I got £500 and I believe its going up.

the better value could be for disabilities. favourite tax credit are no longer capacity examined reward (as kinfolk credit was once) they seem to be a "effective" income tax charge, like new child benefit. on condition that your on dss, will you get it, income help, or Jobseekers.

Its normally £250.00 if you contact your local DSS they will send you the form. In special circumstances you can receive up to £500.00. The form is very short so get one and fill it in you have nothing to lose only to gain..
