i personally think, every laptop brands such as dell, sony, hp, iBM, etc are very popular for us in general. and i must admit that they are at the same level of product quality. buying laptop nowaday you shoud consider to some things as: specification of the laptop, the higher the better of course, for example, proccessor, ram, VGA memory, wireless, monitor, etc..
one more thing is about battery life, the longer the better of of course.
and the most important thing is services after sales.
talking about product quality, all of them are nearly the same. but about services after sale, sony is the worst as i have observed. dell good, and toshiba is good as well
the last thing about laptop is price, the cheaper the better. on this regardm dell is reputation with cheap price and good service
therefore, consider all of factors above, you will find the best one for you

Compaq, Toshiba, Sony, Dell. Those are the most popular ones. Buy the best you can afford because they can get pricey with all the bells and whistles in them.
Determine first what type you need. Do you require all the DVD /CD burning? The ones that can manage your graphics need ar the priciest- consider the Apples.
Before you buy them, ask for a guarranty on the battery. There has been some recalls due to a couple of defective ones in some brands.

Sony Vaio. James Bond uses it! It's expensive but it looks good has exceptional performance and the best display. We use one at home 2 teenagers, my wife and me for private and business needs and it performs brilliantly. We use it for DVD playback through the TV too. We used it to design the layout and mix the sound for 3 books and 2 audio books. The wireless and blue tooth are perfect and my sons use the memory stick to swap music and files with there PSP and Sony phone and cameras.

Gateway
HP
I would go with Gateway. The last time I checked, I think Gateway was the highest-rated one. Check this.
