hi =) well today I went shopping in some market and found out that too many Chinese ppl sell stuff there ( I'm Egyptian, live in Egypt and always get extremely exceited around any tourist -lol- & find an urge to ask him/ her what she thinks of Egypt and why she came here in the first place and if she'd like to do it again,..)
So you can guess what happened to me when I found all these Chinesies out there, I had to talk to at least one!! LOL
so I walked up to one salesgirl (and this is the first time ever I get the courage to talk to a foreigner for no obvious reason lol)
... and the conversation went:
"hey, are these made in China?" ( about the stuff she's selling)
"yes" -in arabic!!
"oooo, and you're Chinese? "
*a smile & nodd*
"and you live here?"
"I love it!"
"wow! you live here aaand you love it! ..well enjoy your stay and I'm glad to meet you, thanks"
lol now I know this is real poor, can anyone help me fix this?!
how do I start a conv. with someone like her?
=) ty

You're not alone. I'm brazilian ( and I live in Brazil) and whenever I see a foreigner, I don't talk to them, but I wish i had the courage to ask about their views on us and some other cultural aspects.
Don't get nervous. It would be so much better if you could talk in another place, like a park, or a restaurant, or some place calmer.

that's nice. I sometimes go to Chinatown to practice my mandarin. I think to start a longer conversation, you can stop by at around the same time next week, or next day, and as they get to recognize you and know you better, you will talk more.

i disagree with the (sardonic) tip to "talk loudly." that's totally annoying when people confuse articulating and talking loudly. it's very condescending to shout at someone.
