The "weightlifting" answer is spot-on. I recently saw a news article about this issue. According to the report, after 40, men start to lose muscle mass, and muscle mass is proportional to the production of testosterone.
How this shows up for me is that I have noticed, since my mid-40s, that sex is just a lot better all around when I'm working out regularly. It's not just that I have more physical endurance and don't get tired as easily -- even if all I'm doing is passively enjoying myself, the feelings of arousal, stimulation and climax are more intense when I'm working out regularly. How much? For me, the intensity drops between 20% and 30% when I'm not working out enough.
To keep this out of the "Penthouse Letters" category, I'll concentrate more on my workouts and less on the sex. By "regularly" I mean hitting the gym at least twice a week, with three times being better. (I'm happy to report that even at 50, and after being married to the same woman for 27 years, my sexual frequency is higher than that. :-)
And my workouts aren't that rigorous; they consist of 30 minutes of some kind of cardio work (the elliptical cross-trainer is my preference, but treadmills work if all the ellipticals are taken), followed by about 30 minutes of strength training, stressing the upper body in particular. I try to rotate the strength-training, and do a mix of chest, bicep, tricep, shoulder and upper-back exercises.
Because of a work crunch I've been away from exercise for about two weeks, and I'm starting to feel it. First, because my lower back starts to get stiff if I haven't been using the back machine at the gym... and second because, well, fooling around doesn't feel as good as it used to. So it's time for me to head back.
Originally I concentrated on high-repetition, low-to-moderate weight exercises because the goal wasn't to pump up like The Governator, the goal was to not drop dead. So I have been doing three sets of fifteen reps and only gradually increasing the weight. However, now that I understand the relationship between muscle mass and testosterone, I think I'm going to change the focus and start doing fewer reps with higher weights. That's the traditional recipe for increasing the size of your muscles.

weightlifting. The average male loses ten pounds of muscle after the age of 30 due to decreasing testosterone levels. The only way to combat that is weightlifting. It promotes health hormone levels. keep in mind i said ten pounds of muscle, not ten pounds on the scale.
