I think they made the right decision on that one. You didn't say if it was an accident or not but regardless I think they were right to leave him out.

If the shooting was intentional he needed to be left out of the list of survivors. If it was accidental, then they should have included the brother's name as well. What a terrible thing to happen in a family!

They probably had to withhold that information from the public so that as few people as possible knew about it. Otherwise, I'd just say mentioning the guy's name would be a bit tacky anyhow.

It makes sense that he would be included, yes. And I can see the rationale behind editor's decision not to add that he was the killer. That's not really necessary in the obit.
