It's a term left over from the MUD (multi-user dungeon/domain) days. MUDs were the text-based precursors to MMORPGs like WoW.
'Mob' is short for 'mobile', ie, something that moved around - so any wandering monsters or NPCs. In WoW, mob typically refers to an aggressive NPC.

i have played ever quest ii and currently playing world of warcraft. mobs is refered to monsters, which is a general reference to anything you can kill (except other players and npcs). alot of people reference mob to a group of monsters, but a mob could be referenced to on creater as well...
the reference i am giving you, should cover alot of in game acronyms

'Mobs' is a slang term for just about anything that moves which you can kill. Basically, it means monsters. Technically NPC's and critters (non-combatant creatures) are mobs too but the term usually isn't intended to mean them.

Mobs in WoW or in any other game simply refers to a group. Whether it be a mob of creatures / humans / etc that you are fighting.

mobs are wondering monsters are npcs that u can kill
adds are something that suddenly or came along out of nowhere while u or ur grp is ALREADY engaging in a fight
