Assuming you've fixed the problem, disconnect and reconnect the battery (wait a few seconds) or pull the main fuse for the central processor in the car and then put it back (again, wait a few seconds).
The the car redetects the problem, the light will come back on.
All this depends on make, model and year.

For a lot of cars its just a strong suggestion until you notice a specific problem. It will usually start to flash if there is a really serious problem that needs immediate attention.
Do pay some heed to it and your car's performance, but don't be suckered into a mechanic's bill for every light that comes on. Its a bit of a convenient scam IMHO.

service engine soon and check engine are two separate lights. Service engine soon means that it is time for an oil change and other required maintenance. If you look in your owners manual it will tell you how to reset the light, but it is better to have your mechanic do that when he services your car.

It's probably just time for a service. Take it in, and have them plug it to the machine to find out what's wrong. It should cost about 50 bucks depending on wher you live. But don't ignore this problem.

Uh....fix what's wrong? (probably emissions related)
Ya think?
Shoot it!
Put tape over it so it doesn't bother you?
Disconnect it by cutting connection under the dash?

Many cars reset themselves, if you fixed the problem, after so many starts.
