Modern dance took all the rules of ballet and broke them. In it's heyday the dancers and coreographers came up with some crazy stuff including walking on walls and simply sitting on the stage. It is very physical usually with very exagerated movements. It's rather like interpretive dance. I don't know how much this helps, you might check on PBS.org and see what you can find.

Modern dance is a form that is a cross between ballet and jazz but is more fluid. Modern also tells a story with the different movements. It is a beautiful type of dance to watch.
