Let x be the number of dimes and y be the number of nickels. From the question we get
x + y = 63 --> (1)
10x + 5y = 505 --> (2) (this is in cents)
rearranging (1), we get
x = 63 - y
Substituting into (2), we get
10(63 - y) + 5y = 505
630 - 10y + 5y = 505
-5y = -125
y = 25
hence, we get
x = 63 - 25
x = 38
therefore she has 25 nickels and 38 dimes

okay, here goes:
let n be the number of nickels and (63 - n) be the number of dimes. Know why? cuz there are a total of 63 nickels and dimes and if there are n nickels, then the REMAINING are dimes.
Now, .05n + .1(63 - n) = 5.05. Why? cuz each nickel is .05 each in value and dimes are .1 each in value, and in total, you have $5.05. I hate working with so many decimals, so let's move all the decimal points two places to the right, 'kay? this gives
5n + 10(63 - n) = 505. Now, distribute (multiply) 10 to each of 63 and n. This gives 5n + 630 - 10n = 505.
-5n + 630 = 505
-5n = - 125
n = 25 nickels
Thus if there are 25 nickels, then there will be 38 dimes. To check, .05 * 25 = 1.25 and .1 * 38 = 3.8. Adding, you have 5.05 dollars.

She has 25 Nickels and 38 Dimes:
25*.05 + 38*.10= $5.05
1.25 + 3.80 = $5.05
Now if this is your homework, don't write this as your answer. It is correct, but your teacher wants a formula to explain it. I'm not going to do ALL of the work for you!
