A smoke alarm beeps when the battery needs to be replaced. You should not wait for the beeping but should replace the battery each year. A good way to remember is do it on the switch from daylight savings time.

First don't smoke(Ha Ha)!! Theres a small red button on the top or inside the smoke detector. All you have to do is push the red button to reset your smoke alarm. If you have a hard wire smoke detector you have to punch in your security code, and call the fire department to let them know if you have a problem or not.

nice answer sandy....ditto ....(am licensed electrician and fire inspector)...and OH yea.. my 5000th point! woohoo... anyways yes dust will definatley keep it beeping as well as the obvious battery...also a stuck test button would do it also....what i dois BLOW the SD(smoke detector) out with a can of air...that fixes 90% of the problems.. if it still beeps then toss it

Have you vacuumed it? Most of the time, that's all it needs. Dust particles get into them and interfere with the electrical componits. This is also true for battery chargers,i.e. chargers for power tools, etc. So, once in a while vacuum them.
