The music business is like any other business. It has an entry level, intermediate and executive. There are obvious differences from the retail industry, for example, but YOUR mental approach should be this way. Start by learning every aspect of your specific field. If you're a singer, get vocal training. Learn your scales, learn theory, learn how to write and produce music. How? Start by re-producing songs that influence you. Just like there is no way to become vice-president of Microsoft overnight, there's no way to become a multi-platinum artist overnight. Patience is very important and NEVER go into this business strictly for money, it will take longer to come than you want. If you really love this field, you will persevere until you are at a comfortable level. If you have recorded music, do your own footwork. Start here: www.cdbaby.com . Selling your own units is no easy task, but after your first sale, you will have officially "broken in" to the business. Remember this too, the more you learn to do on your own, the less you will have to pay others for. ;-)

Depends what you want to do. Performer? Agent? Manager? Lawyer? Groupie?
Pick up Donald Passman's book on the music business. Will give you a good overview of how things work.
