My Vietnamese friend says it's old wives tale type superstition. Mirrors placed over (outside above) the entranceways keep out evil spirits. Now, it just so happens that since I put mirrors over the entranceways to my house my husband's nasty X wife has stayed away. The mirror over the stove is for prosperity. I put a mirror over the stove and our financial problems stopped immediately. I have no idea if t's true, but it sure gives me a giggle. It's "worked" for over a year. So the mirrors stay!

On the scientific side, it is very hard to even take seriously the thesis that:
"A mirror in the entrance of a house is good for the inhabitants"
You would have to define properly what "good" is, in that sense, it may be practical for the last (or first) minute check up, but hardly anything else, Feng Shui is plagued by such loose ends, so there is nothing to prove.
The scientific conclusion would surely be: Do as you please.

A practical reason would be to check to see if everything is straight and tidy (hair the way it should be, makeup ok, tie tied right, ect.)
But then again, did you mean on the inside, or the exterior of the house? (like, say, a little mirrored wall hanging), Because some people believe that bad spirits run away from their own reflection (or something of the sort) and put some sort of mirror on their porch.

I think you should have a mirror at the entrance of you house. If nothing else , you could check to see if your hair is in place and you look good before you leave. You can also check out whose behind you when you return home.

It is good from the Chinese Feng shui beliefs. The mirror represents water, reflects light and gives the appearance of more space and keeps away bad spirits. A mirror over the cooking stove is also a good idea according to Feng Shui teachings.
Here is a good link by a Feng Shui master:

It comes from oriented folklore. It’s supposed to be good Feng shui, to have a mirror in the entryway of your house. Traditional practitioners reason to believe windows can reflect bad Qi (energy) from entering your home.

I have a mirror next to the door so I can check myself before leaving the house, you know, to see if I forgot my earrings or if my hair is messed up.

Now, being a girl, what's the first thing you do when you enter any room? CHECK , CHECK, CHECK..RIGHT? I thought so...we have a mirror so that the ladies can fix their hair, check makeup, etc....especially on a windy day, or snow, or whatever. Also to check yourself before leaving the house....

It was deemed in the early days that seeing yourself before you walked in to a house was the formal thing to do so taht you could make sure there was nothing on your shirt, in your teeth, you weren't wrinkled, etc.

If a light shines into it, you can use the reflected beam to burn up the bad spirits like ants. Very handy.
If you have ant spirits lurking nearby.
