I have heard that this astronomical phenomenon is supposed to occur and I am looking to either confirm or disspell it. If this is so, where do I find more information about the event?

I think that its supposed to happen. Try looking into the Mayan or Aztec calender as they believed that when the planets align, it will bring about the end of the world. I think the date is May 11 or something. I am not exactly sure of the date, but look into those calenders.

I don't think there are any unusual astronomical occurrences expected in 2012. You may be thinking of the end of the current cycle of the Mayan long count calendar, an event being being touted as significant by some new-agers. Some of these folks are also claiming that the Winter Solstice will exactly align with the galactic center that year, which is inaccurate.

The "official" date I believe is December 21, 2012. As for all hell breaking loose? Who knows. Isn't it already?
