Depending on which Ipod you get, I would pick an Ipod. You don't need both anyway, because an Ipod holds (typically) way more music, and depending on the type can hold images and videos. I don't buy into this stuff because I had an MP3 player years ago and after about a month lost interest. None of my friends who bought one even still use them. It's really just a fad item.

Ipod deals with copy protection and the other MP3 players don't. So if you went to Itunes, you would need an Ipod or an Itunes player to play those songs. I heard you couldn't play standard mp3s on an Ipod. Regular Mp3 players can hold as much as an Ipod (more than what you would use since the batteries will die after a few songs anyways) and cost 1/2 or a third as much as an Ipod.

Check out the Creative Zen Vision:M. The 30G model is $229 at Circuit City and does video, music, it has an FM Tuner, record from built in speaker or radio. Not as skinny as the ipod, but it's still small and does more and costs less.

The iPod has a huge market share (over 80%) for a reason. It is the easiest to use and it works great. The iTunes music store is the best music store.

I can't think of a reason to buy another player.
