The last time I ran my dishwasher it started to smell like something was burning so I turned it off. The smell wasn't present the prior time I ran the dishwasher and there is nothing that I can see that got on the heating element. It looks like everything is "plugged in" and "connected" properly under the access panel (now let's be realistic, I have no idea what I'm looking at, but nothing is hanging loose). I would rather not have to pay a repair man, but I have no idea what to check, or for that matter, what I'm looking for.

Thanks!

Did you smell the burning before you opened the door? If not, double check your heating coil. I'll bet you'll find a bit of burnt plastic from a mixing spoon or the like. It may be under the coil. If you have the option, run the washer without the heating coil activated and see if you smell anything. If you still do, I agree with the others about your motor starting to burn out and you need a repairman or a new washer. They aren't all that expensive unless you want all the bells and whistles.

Make sure there is no plastic residue left on the heating element and set it on the "dry" cycle with nothing in it to burn off any excess. It's the only way to make sure that it won't continue to stink up your house. You can run your dishes through again and if your house still smells like New Jersey, open all the windows and turn on all your fans to get as much fresh air in as possible. This, along with turning the wrong burner on or having a plastic utensil fall on one usually only happens to me in the winter when its freezing out and its really unpleasant to open everything up. But it's the only way to get the smell out - clean the heating element as best you can, turn it to full power to burn off any remaining plastic, and plenty of fresh air. You can use air fresheners to mask it or baking soda to absorb it, but mostly you need to make sure the thing is clean and replace the air in the home.

Assuming there is nothing on the heating element or blocking the water spinners, your motor is probably burning out. This is likely to be the case if the machine is several years old. You need a motor to pump (pressurize) the water, and sooner or later the grease dries up and the bearings start to overheat.
