I have an Acer Aspire 5004WLMi. With all rebates (but not including extra warranty that I purchased), if cost about $750. It has everything that I need or want. The only 2 things that I would change about it is that I would move the button to access the wireless internet. Mine is on the very front of the laptop and it's very easy to hit the button and get kicked off the internet. Also, I would change how the volume is. To turn it up or down, you need to hold down the Fn (function) key on the left of the keyboard while using the up or down arrow on the right side of the keyboard. I would make sure the little things like that won't bother you. They bother me, but I've had my laptop for about 7 months and am very used to it now. Also, if you have problems with the computer, Acer is very good about repairing. When the computer wouldn't recognize that the charger was connected, I send it out on Thursday and I had it back the next Wednesday. And Acer always pays for the shipping, which they should because it's under warranty.

What ever you go with keep in mind that a cheap $499 Dell special will be outdated just as quick as a $1,299 IBM. Overall it really depends on what you need the laptop for, if all you need it to do is normal everyday use; email, Internet, and school work I would just go for the $499 special with a memory upgrade. Stay away from the "extended warranties" by the time you purchase it your right back up to the $1,299 laptop, the stock warranties are usually decient, last 1-3yrs and by the time it runs out you have an outdated paperweight anyway.
