UEFA Considering Temporary Send-Offs?

The long-term aftermath of the recent Champions League match between Barcelona and Chelsea at Nou Camp could be significant.

UEFA is now considering temporary dismissals, aka sin-bins, for players -- like those in the aforementioned Champions League tie -- who harass the match officials. Goal.com's Pat Walsh explored a related idea back in May in his piece "Walsh: How About Seeing Blue Rather Than Red?"

William Gaillard, UEFA's communications director, suggested the ice hockey-esque and rugby-esque idea of sin-bins this week. "Maybe football could learn something from rugby, where the word of the referee is respected and not contested," he said.

"It's becoming a bad habit; everyone has something to say.

"It's not easy to apply the 10-yard rule to football but there are other ideas which could be brought in to tackle this, maybe temporary sendings-off."

England experimented with the 10-yard rule, whereby referees could move free kicks 10 yards closer to the goal in situations where the players overstepped the boundaries in how they confronted match officials. FIFA decided not to adopt the idea.

A send off rule would be crushing to the game. It would waste time trying to get the player off the field. In high school ball, a player is sent off automatically after a caution untill the next sub opportunity (free substitution). The game would move slower and the opposing team will get an advantage.
As far as harrasing officials, it should stop. The laws of the game state that only the captain of the team may question a call. If this was taken seriously, and dissenting players cautioned, we may be able to at least fake some respect for the referee.

Some time ago there was actually a "blue" card. It was a card that sent a player off for the rest of the current game, but did not effect the next game.

I've head about this potential rule FIFA might enforce!!!!! I'd love to see the rule enforced, I think it will really benefit the team that has been disadvantaged without being to soft with just a yellow or to hard with the red!!! I also see that sin-bins should be enforced when a player who fouls another player which results in the fouled player having to receive treatment off the pitch, the player in the wrong should be sin-binned until the player returns to the pitch. That way the team that's temporarily reduced because of the injury is not at a numbers advantage!!!

Its really not that stupid if you think about it. Say you get injured by a player fouling you but its not serious enough to warrant a red and have to receive treatment off the pitch... Is it stupid if the player that injured you be sin-binned until your either substituted or your OK to return to the pitch!?!

Send-Offs sounds so dumb, I like the yellow card rule better coz unless you already have a yellow card, you can still play. I mean Send-Offs are a good threat to try and prevent them from whining so much!! And I didn't know they use to have blue cards??? That's interesting....I think that would be alright actually. I mean, players should know that whining about a call won't change anything. It's just wasting time. But what can you do........
Threatening the players by sending them off might make them think twice before arguing with the ref.
I say, bring in the blue cards to kick them off for that current game and nothing else to see how it works out. Threats always work :] LOL

I haven't heard about this but it doesn't surprise me. It's stupid. It won't help the game. Sounds to me like political correctness gone mad.

"Temporary expulsions" as they are refered to by FIFA, are currently illegal at all levels. I do believe they could have some benefit, particularly at the youth level.

Give 'em a red card. Then again, they should give it a try.

I don't like the idea. Just give him a yellow card and he'll shutup.
