He's the closest of all the super heroes who COULD actually exist.

He's my fav, so I am a little bias. But think about it. If you had some independently wealthy guy or girl, who dedicated their lives to fighting crime and trained to that level... Sure, why not?

Special Forces training, Intelligence agencies, martial arts, weapons, detective/law-enforcement agencies, security firms, and high tech toys exist with the level of sophistecation to make someone a Batman.

So, yeah, Batman could exist today.

I wonder that myself. I wonder whether someone with no innate super powers could manage to keep their identity secret and yet operate at as high a level as Batman does. I'd write the character differently; I'd have young Bruce, before he started his career, spend a bunch of his millions setting up a slew of false identities to hide behind, along with 'security doubles' for Bruce Wayne, so that he can run his businesses and yet still fight crime.

Theoretically Batman could exist, but the chances of him staying away from the spotlight and not being found out about his secret identity are far from safe. With modern technology, he would be caught in a matter of days, people would hunt him down just to find out who he is.

Of course he could.
Think about it. He;s the only super hero who has no super powers at all. He;s a billionaire with pent up rage who, in a pissed off mood, goes out and night and beats the crap out of the criminals just like the ones that killed his parents.

You or i would be consumed with fury as much as he is. I think Batman is the closest thing to a hero that any one of us, with the proper financial backing (!), could do.
