You are pulling things out of statistics that are not necessarily related. Let's drill this down so that anyone reading can think this through...

Let's take Texas vs. Louisiana.

Texas has Multiple major cities, vast numbers of corporate and industrial headquarters and business, and an overwhelmingly large population of "cheap labor" from legal and illegal immigrants.

Louisiana has only a few major cities, has very little in the way of corporations compared to Texas, though it does have a fairly decent industrial sector.

Ignore, for a minute, the party in charge of those states, and just take the above into the equation. Texas has more, and can very easily support more. Louisiana has less, and even before Katrina, has far less growth overall. Economics of the two states are virtually opposites, even though they are right next door to eachother.

The reason that the party in charge doesn't matter, is that these states have been this way for decades. Regardless of democrat or republican governors, senators, representatives, or the President, these states have always been, for the most part, the way they are right now.

When you do throw a democrat and a republican into the mix, what you get is a slightly different "focus" on which areas to improve at the time, but both of them make improvements when they can. Republicans are more corporate and business oriented, whereas Democrats are more education and small business oriented. Both are important, and both make improvements to eachother over time anyway... but it's the "quick fix" and want for what is better now that can make one seem better than the other.

Is that cause or effect though?

You could go really obscure and compare growth and standard of living in New York vs South Dakota as well.

Could be, I was actually seeing the same thing here in my state (NY) regarding gas prices. Noticed how the red states were the first to go down, and down the furthest than in the blue states. Coincidence?
