Democritus basically coined the original atomic theory. He stated that the atom was the smallest particle that things are made from, and that is cannot be divided into smaller units. He turned out to be wrong, but was a few thousand years ahead of his time, no less.

He was a Greek philosopher who made what's widely recognized as the first atomic theory. He said all matter is made up of particles called atomos, which is Greek for individual. It's where we get the word atom from. He believed the atom was the smallest possible unit you could divide any matter into.

He postulated the smallest indivisible particle and called it the atom.

He didn't really have a clue about its nature though.
