Honestly, stop worrying about the grades. Become involved in other activities that will expand all of your talents and stimulate all of the areas of your mind. I have found in my adult life that most people who were valedictorians in HS were only "book smart" and had no common sense and found it difficult to function in everyday social situations. If you truly want to be better than him, become a well rounded person so that you can be a benefit to society as an adult.

Yeah I had the same thing happen to me in high school. I made a B in Boy's Gym class freshmen year and then after that my GPA could never be perfect. Yep, frustrating.
There's not much you can do but try to beat him on every other thing - like SAT, ACT, honors, etc. You can try to catch him cheating or other vindictive thing, but things like that make you feel bad later.
Your grades need to be high but when it comes down to it they have little effect whether you're one or two. The good thing is after a long time your grades don't matter anyway. The last time you'll use GPA for anything is your first job after college - after that NO ONE CARES!

Try giving more than asked for on homework answers. How?
- Neatness and making things easier for your teachers to read and mark.
- When you can answer with just one word, make it a sentece instead (that helps teacher marking without looking back at question list)
- Think from the teacher's point of view when faced with all other homework handed in, and see how yours would be more refreashing
- Re-read your work before handing it in (eg. in your question, you have grammer errors - theres / there's; Caps for new sentences)
It does not take a lot more effort. Just another 5% more.
Good luck

ever heard of cut throat competition? you gotta find some way to screw the other guy over. For example, in my orgo lab class a couple years back, people would add salt into the other guy's experiment to screw up their results. Since grades were based on how well we did the experiemnt ie) how much product was obtained, some people got screwed cuz their experiments were sabotaged.

Since I'm assuming your GPA is weighted, he probably has more honors/AP courses than you, which would make his GPA much higher even if you had all As.
So, my suggestion is to take more honors/GPA classes to increase your GPA. And plus, they look good on your transcripts.
