For anyone who watched the tape, it obviously wasn't a joke. He was speaking to a group of college students and said "if you don't study, you'll get stuck in iraq." but even if you buy his line of "botched joke", how's that funny? he got worse grades than Bush... and he wanted to be president?!?

It was not a botched joke. That was just the (bad) excuse he made after his comment got media attention.
The truth is that liberal politicians usually get away with saying things on University campuses that could lose them an election if the general population heard about them. Kerry never expected his comments to make the national media.
