I dont know but it is crap. All rap does is talk about sex, hos, money, and cars. How unorginal and boring is that. There is no talent anymore. Nowadays anybody can get a record deal and rap. All of it sounds the same. Rap was get 10 years ago but now its straight garbage. Thats why I started listening to other genres of music.

The reason rap is viewed in such a negative light is because of the type of rap that's popular. Record companies think progressive, or new age music, is defined on how outrageous or disgusting it can be without being censored. There is no more time being spent on actual creativity or musicianship, so rappers, singers and even filmmakers are pushing the envelope morally instead of musically/creatively. There are many rappers who produce positive music, but because it's positive; it's ignored. There are many genres of music that are "in trouble" in my opinion. Is there anyone out there who could consider Paris Hilton a serious recording artist? Does that mean pop music is crap? No, it means that the artists with the most publicity give the music a bad name, just like rap artists. You should keep in mind also, a majority of rappers are talking about things that happen in their everyday lives. If it is difficult to relate to, it's obvious that you know nothing about where they're from. That's not really a bad thing in most cases. We should all make an effort to agree to disagree before tearing down something we don't understand.

Rap is only 10% content 90% beat. It's the beat that carries the song to be a hit. Many artists are one hit wonders because of content but due to powerful producers like Dr. Dre, Mr. Collipark, Play N Skillz, Lil Jon, etc. These guys will always have a source of income and have nothing to worry about. It has nothing to do with ignorance. Ignorance is for those low lifes that listen to country as Sally Mae cheated on Billy Bob along with those drugged up freaks that call their music rock and alternative.

Rap music is popular because of the fact it sounds good in a stereo system. It is fun to dance and listen to. In Memphis tn though it possesses a potential problem. The kids here take it to heart and start acting like what they hear. We are the #1 city for murders in the US. The words suck! Most people don't even like the words let alone understand them. I personally like the beat only. I strongly believe that rap has lost its popularity in the last couple of years. It is all about preference really. hope this helps

Rap Music is Popular because people want to hear poetry to music.
Some like to hear the beat in the background so they can dance, while others jus like the words because they're so catchy!

Modern rap appeals to brain-dead image appeasing fools....that's why it's so popular. Fools that give into the tough/hustler type of mentality because their parents raised fools. It's all negative tripe, no message, no positivity, all trash outside of the underground hip hop scene.
It's absolute garbage for the most part now. Gone are the days of genius with artists such as Tribe, Fugees, Del the Funky Homosapien, old school Roots, Jeru the Damaja, Pharcyde, etc.
Like DJ Shadow said in "why hip hop sucks in '93"...."it's all about the money" and no longer about the message.

Because people like what they like... It's popular because people are followers, and it's the thing to listen to now... All rap isn't crap... and most of the time people aren't listening to the lyrics anyway, people just want something to dance to.

I think it's less content (lyrics) and more the music.
Have you listened to it lately? There isn't anything original anymore - Everyone is sampling songs from the mid-late '80's and stuff. The latest in this debauchery is Fergie doing Fergalicious. She rips off three songs in one - but it's got the catchy hook that appeals to a lot of people <>
