I tutor high school math students, the problem I usualy come across is: the teacher is not willing to slow down and explain each and every detail of the problem.
I find once I break down the problem and talk them through it they are more comfortable with the math.

I hated math, my kids hated math, so when they were about your son's age, I bought the computer game Math Blasters, they loved it and they learned while having fun. I also played Yahtzee with them a lot and made them add the things up themselves. If he's having a lot of trouble, you might talk to his teacher and see if there is some kind of concessions you can make, like having him do not quite so many problems in each assignment, or seeing if they have any tutors. My daughter was a math tutor for elementary students when she was in high school, and it really helped those students. (She was my math child!)
Working with sports scores and stats helps some kids who are into sports too.
Good luck, being a parent is hard sometimes.

beat him with his math book try showing him math can be fun find something he can relate to and use it in math for instance ok say he likes spider man then use him ex: spider man is fighting with six bad guys and 3 time as many appear from no where how many bad guy will spider man have to beat ( 6x3 )OK and if he is pass that stage tell him if he can learn to speak the English language with all the verbs nouns pro nouns etc etc then math should be easy because math is a language of few words and those words are add subtract multiple and divide and the rest is easy

I still have a fear of math...

Looking back on it, I wish I had a tutor. Why not get him some one-on-one help from someone with good credentials and is patient? It will only get worse once he hits more advanced math (LOL, my own experience...).

I used to hate math with all my strength and now I tutor every single type of "math' - geometry, trignometry, algebra, etc.
There is only one secret...in order to actually enjoy it, he must be good at it...invest on a tutor...you won't regret it.
Good luck
