Formatting wont do it, smashing it may not get the job done, put the harddrive in the oven at 250 degrees for 10 minutes! Thats how the pros do it! This will melt the disk in the drive. Alchemist is a dip too! 250 degrees WILL melt the hard drive disk! This is the place all of your valuables are stored! A magnet wont do it either because the disk is shunt protected! I have been building computers since 1972! Alch! Stick to fixin sandwiches cause you dam sure no nothing of electronics components!

10 minutes in a 250 degree oven won't even ruin the electronics on a hard drive. 30 minutes in a 400 degree oven would cook the electronics, but the data on the platters will be as good as it ever was.

To ruin a hard drive, just remove it, and place any large magnet (20 oz. or larger) on the drive. Leave it for awhile, and it's completely safe to throw away. That will not only destroy the electronics, it will destroy all of the magnetized data, also, and make it completely unrecoverable, by anyone.

I am going to give you a pretty unusual solution.
Even if you delete your data, it stays there till you overwrite it.
So what I suggest is format it, delete the partitions, start all over with fdisk tool. Then the fill up the hard drive to its capacity with useless data like movies. So this will over write what ever you had inside it. Also, then if your hard drive is usable you could safely sell it. What say ?

You can format the drive before discardingg it. I can give you a link that deals with hard drive problems. Some RAM/ hard drive problems can be easily fixed yourself by using easily available tools. I found the info at http://fixit.in useful

You can get a secure erase program if you don't want to make hard-drive souffle :-)
