here is a very realistic list in order:
1. fire dave littlefield
2. get team bought by mark cuban
3. sign mark texiera
4. consider signing alfonso soriano
5. trade away whole rotation except for tom gorzelanny, ian snell, and zach duke
6. fire jim tracy and hire ken macha like they should have last year
7. the list is neverending...................

They have the raw talent that needs to be refined. As a person who watches alot of baseball, the pirates just didn't click. One day the pitching was on, the next day it was the hitters, but never on the same day.
As a team that lost 26 one run games by the all0star break, that tells me that you are almost there. Just need to get a deep bull pen, more consistant starts from your starters, protection for Jason Bay and ownership that cares. Hopefully with the new CBA where it makes the owners that recieve the "luxury tax" to spend that money, the pirates will get better.

Pitching wins championships. But in the case of the Pirates they need pitching and position players and that means payroll. Your owners are pocketing the "Luxury Tax" dolars that the high market/payroll teams pay into every year instead of spending on players. Until that stops and they spend some dollars your team is destined to the cellar.
The Mets should be the NL example. A one year turn around.

They need to have more aggressive ownership. Picking up hacks like Jeremy Burnitz is not the answer. Small market teams can win with a mix of young, cheap talent and mid-priced veteran leadership. The Pirates' problem has been that when they make trades, like the Jason Kendall deal, they don't ever get anything back that can help them long term. Another example is not trading Mesa two years ago when his stock was high.

The Pirates have good, young talent, keep it and develop them. Also, I'd trade Nady and Burnitz (or let them go, not sure if they're FA's). Try to get pitching from them. Freddy Sanchez is a hidden gem, too. He came out of nowhere this season.
I've seen a couple of Pittsburgh's young pitchers, definitely have potential.
I'd like to see Pittsburgh back in the hunt, too. They have an awesome ballpark and it used to be a great baseball town.

pitching and protection. Their starters need work, they need that one dominating starters that the others can rally behind. They also need to protect Jason Bay. Freddie Sanchez had a great year hitting, but it's not enough. They need a line up that will punish pitcher for throwing around Bay. They have a lot of youth, and if they can use their farm system and really develop some guys and maybe make a few key pick ups, they'll be fine. I don't know about the owners, if the owners suck, that can make a big difference.

A Miracle...some people comming out to the games to increase their revenue so they can get some high priced free agents, I like Jim Tracy thats a good step by the organization to hire him. I'm a Dodger fan and we hated to see him go. You have some good pitching, I hate to see teams trade away young pitchers once they are not in the playoff chace, I think thats why the KC Royals and low market teams get stuck in that position year after year because they are always rebuilding instead of building..if that makes sense.

GM Neal Huntington is a minimum of attempting to gather the skills needed to maintain a aggressive club. they have 8 novices on their modern ML roster and with the extra youthful pitching team persevering with to advance below Joe Kerrigan, i do no longer think of it incredibly is going to be long till the Bucs prepare a sturdy season. With some sturdy commerce cut-off date bargains and doubtless a pair of loose agent signings interior the low season, the Pirates ought to container a team over .500 by capacity of next season. i seem for them to be exceedingly aggressive in 2011, with Pedro Alvarez, Jose Tabata and Brad Lincoln all contributing to the Pirates.

sign better free agents and not some old timers that are at the end of their careers. The owners also need to spend some money.

they need to do a better job of drafting young players so that they will have some prospects for a brighter future and spending some cash on players won't hurt either
