I agree with some of the other people. A vinegar and gin mixture will dehydrate and kill existing weeds but manually pulling them is an excellent recommendation as well if you just have a few here and there. Also once in the spring and the fall you should spread an organic pre-emergent weed killer. Chemical fertilizers ultimately produce a poor lawn that needs more chemicals to maintain its so called health. This is because chemical fertilizers are basically water soluable and feed the grass only on a very short-term basis thus producing shallow root growth and ultimately thatch and a poor lawn that is highly susceptible to broad leaf weed growth. Organic fertilizers with a gluten base are just as high in nitrogen but break down slowly in your yard much like a time released medication. Breaking down basically means rotting. As the organic fertilzer rots, the nitrogen is released and it also feeds the microrganisms that your lawn needs. Also since your lawn is fed slowly, the organic fertilizer is well worked down into the soil by rain water thus producing deep root growth and ultimately a nice thick turf that is not nearly as susceptible to future weeds.

Dandelion are in category broadleaf weeds. In my experienced we ussually hand pulling or hoeing this type of weeds, but to ensure that you are taking out the whole roots system also. If you are trying to kill this dandelion due to the taking care your lawn area, then the method mention are worth try, because weed ussually lost with a healthy turf area. A consistent of maintenance work need to be done and I know how tough is was for the fist few weeks, but once you have eliminate it, than the need of controlling and making your turf healthy is another process.
I don't came across any homemade herbicides, but you can always try buy the BROADLEAF herbacides.

Hope that help!

Continual manual removal, preferrably before tap root sets in, otherwise then you must be sure to remove the whole plant.
Persistance.
I have heard that a mixture of amonia and boiling hot water has been used to kill dandelions.
