my ob/gyn found that i have ovarian cysts, then found out that i am also anemic. he decided to keep an eye on my cysts for awhile to see if they go away on there own instead of removing them right away. i had an iud and because of the heavy periods, he put me on birth control pills and removed the iud to help clear my anemia. this has all happened within 5 months or so. i am really unhappy with taking pills - i don't like the hormonal changes that have been taking place in my body. seriously, im to the point where id rather die than to take these damn pills, but he will not let me stop taking them. he told me that he wants to get ahold of the situation with my cysts first. what the hell do the pills have to do with my cysts?? does anyone know??

It's your call. IF YOU DON'T WANT TO TAKE THE PILLS, THEN DON'T. I mean really, is he standing there ramming them down your throat or something?
Get a second opinion if you are uncomfortable with this doctor. HE IS THE ONE THAT SHOULD BE ANSWERING YOUR QUESTIONS. This is YOUR body and if you aren't comfortable with the one who is supposed to be helping you take care of it, then find someone that you are comfortable with.

The pill helps reduce ovarian cysts and also reduces the severity of menstrual periods - it's hormonally based. It's possible that you have been diagnosed with PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) and this is the most common treatment. It is far less invasive than surgery, and one time surgery is not a realistic expectation since the underlying hormonal issue will cause a resurgence of the cysts if there is no hormonal treatment.

The IUD doesn't help with anemia - it's important to ask the doc why you are anemic (could be several different reasons) and what the best treatment will be. You may be feeling awful because without adequate hemoglobin concentration you have a reduced oxygen carrying capacity which would make you fairly tired depending on the severity of the anemia.

Ask the doc these questions - it's possible that you could end up being switched to another pill with a different hormonal load that would work just as well. Good luck.

Ovarian cysts can also cause hormonal imbalances like dark facial hair. Personally I'd rather have the bloating than a mustach. Perhaps you can change to a pill that doesn't give you as much side effects as you seem to be having. Birth control pills can also be prescribed to be taken without a 7 day gap in the cycle so you don't have a period, to help your ovaries clear up on their own. The alternate choice would be to have your orvaries removed, which means no children if you want them and would also put you in menopause.

Tell him you want off the pills, and on to a natural progesterone cream. If he stares at you blankly, find another ob/gyn.

The estrogen in the pills can be causing your cysts to grow, as they are estrogen-driven. The progestin in the pill is what your doctor is thinking will help.

Natural progesterone alone will do a much better job - without all the awful side effects.

As a previous poster said, definitely pick up any book by Dr. Lee. I recommend the newest one that came out in August - "Hormone Balance Made Simple".
You can also take a look at his website. There are articles there about ovarian cysts: http://www.johnleemd.com

The pills minimize your heavy periods, and help to control the pain caused by your cysts.

Read Suzanne Somers new book "Ageless". It has lots of good hormone information that will help you. I agree with you on the pill thing - and now that it is all behind me I can look back and say I wish I hadn't taken them. You might want to read "What your doctor may not tell you about pre menopause" if you are around 30.

Birth contol pills regulate your hormone levels and keep your body in sync. Especially if you are having abnormal bleeding problems or abnormal blood disorder problems. They have to take things one step at a time.

birth control helps get rid of the cysts without surgery, it worked for me. personally, i HATE birth control, because of all the crazy hormones. but until the cysts are taken care of, it's your best option.
