It's been my experience that gas prices are higher on the interstate, however even those are competitive at times.
I think the reason the prices are higher there is because most people are not willing to travel into communities to search for a better price. It is easier to just get it where it is more convenient and the retailers know this.
A good example of this is right here in my area. We have an interstate running right through this area and the gas prices there at the interstate are as much as 7-10 cents higher than in town.
But like I said, it is just easier to refuel where it is more convenient.

Off the interstate. Gas stations on the interstate bet that you will stop there and fuel up so they raise their prices. They bet on the convenience of that route as a place to refuel.
Go the extra distance and save a few bucks.

A lot also depends on location. To wit, when i drove across America in 2001, the gas in Montana was about 20-30 cents a gallon cheaper than when I crossed into South Dakota.
However, in Mitchell, the gas was cheaper than at either of those spots. And Ithe station I went to was well into town.
Other times (as I played the Cheap Gas Game), I saw interstate gas for a lot less (except in New Jersey)

in sparsely populated area, the gas by the interstate is the best price. They are usually chain stores, like chevron or bp, and will sell at a lower price because the buy gas in bulk. The little stations an only buy in small amounts so they pay a higher wholesale price, then they have to add a profit margin.

If you're not concerned about the price, then go with the interstate stations. If you're like me, and want to experience a little bit of Americana, and want some personal service, or conversation, then go take a little excursion. It gets your mind off the traffic, and is very relaxing
