Information is widely available for free , is it really neccesary to teach millions of kids each and every year exactly the same things from exactly the same books .

Why don't we instead encourage free thought and help individuals reach the peak of their own particular intelligence by teaching them how to find the information they need , rather than telling them what we think they need to know ?

That's a good question. I also think that children should learn how to organise all the information they get everyday. However it depends on how you want to teach that to them. It's important to teach them how to choose the information they need and, to do that, they need some knowledge

Bringing in the National Curriculum was a good idea in general.

It stated broadly speaking what the children should be learning in each year.
Topics or themes were left to the Coordinator of the subject in each school or pyramid.
This stopped the sort of thing that happened to my son..... in Yr 4 at Lower School he studied the Romans (coincidence with and above!) He then changed to Middle School and in Yr 5 guess what...''did'' the Romans..... we then moved County and he went into Yr 6 and ...yes you've guessed it.... along came the Romans. Now being a lazy boy he did not learn more about the topic each time he just learnt how to re-hash his work.

Then came SATs.... and the teachers had to make sure the children knew certain things and could perform certain action.... so choices were nlimited .... the reality of this testing was not to find out what the children knew BUT TO TEST THE TEACHERS.
THen came OFSTED and league tables.... schools are tested against several criteria to see if they are giving ''Value for money''
Whilst I don't advocate we hide from the fact that there are poor teachers trapped in the classrooms we should not hound all teachers.
If a teacher today stands infront of a class of children and EXPLAINS something..... they ARE A BAD TEACHER according to the Government !!

The teacher has to provide worksheets at say 15 different levels of ability and let the children teach themselves....even if the children can't read or English is not their 1st language.... the sheets have to be made accessible to them as well.....

And then they wonder why so many teachers are leaving the profession.... and they cannot recruit new ones.
Also there is a nationwide shortage of Head teachers... because ultimately they ''carry the can..

AND PARENTS>>>>>>>> IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO BRING UP YOUR CHILDREN.
THIS INCLUDES MAKING THEM SOCIALLY ACCEPTABLE>

Ihave just been to a Roman feast at my granddaughters primary school where they were all dressed up in togas and sang a song about the Romans. The kids had baked and had bunches of grapes and other fruits to eat, they had great drawings on the wall of things of Roman times and it was good fun. What a lovely way to learn history, they all seemed to enjoy it and it was so relaxed much better than sitting at a desk reading and writing. They were all very interested in the Romans.

Maria Montessori thought of that many years ago ! Just to direct children to find things out for themselves ! Teachers are not call teachers but directresses because they only give direction !
Both my children went to Montessori Schools and did very well and developed very well ! We should change our general education system ,yes !

'I totally agree with you , but lets face it , some parents can't be bothered and the kids teach themselves at school, teachers these days only supervise. I know I'm going to get some stick for my answer but I don't care, it's true, that's why a lot of children are so unruley.

if you reinvented what children could think most would choose to not think at all, its important to keep things like science, maths, english bcos if theyre gone then almost ever profession out there is too, no doctors, lawyers, teachers. Sometimes you need to tell people what to know for them to realise what they want to learn

I FEEL ITS IMPORTANT FOR CHILDREN TO BR TAUGHT SIMILAR THINGS, OTHERWISE THEY WILL NOT BE ABLE TO TEST THEM,EACH CHILD WOULD BE ON DIFFERENT LEVELS, YOU CAN STILL IMPROVE YOUR CHILD'S EDUCATION YOURSELF,AND ENCOURAGE THEM TO THINK FOR THEMSELVES.
