Problem is, we have become so complacent because either:

we are opulent and apathetic (I've got my suv so let me be)
we are ignorant and apathetic (I've got my MTV so let me be)
we work so hard for so little we haven't any energy left to worry about the rest of the world (I've got barely anything, whoa is me)

Truth is, there are hardly any trustworthy politicians out there. So people have become disenchanted with the whole process. Unfortunately, it hasn't donned on them that if the majority of people feel this way, they could work at getting honest people involved and vote to change it.

(I can't believe Kerry gets such a bad rap. The Repub spin machine is relentless. I mean the guy was willing to raise taxes on himself and the other Upper-Upper class tax bracket and NOT the middle or lower class bracket, to get the country out of debt. He's a hero in my book.)

To answer your question directly, we already have sat idly. In 2004, there were several instances that illustrate that the machines were possibly used to steal the election. Proof is illustrated in the new HBO documentary "Hacking Democracy". Please see the links below as my source.

This will not change without either an honest congressional oversight placed on legislation regarding the e-voting machines, or social revolt. I am not holding my breath on either, particularly the latter.

If you are talking about voting over the Internet that does not happen. What does happen is that if a state uses electronic devices the data is stored on a memory card. The machine is not connected to the internet. They take the card to a central location connect it to a main computer(also not connected to the internet) and it tabulates the results. Also a paper record is produced at the time a person votes.

Right...That is why we should go back to paper ballots. To make sure we know that every vote counts.
How stupid is it that we feel we have to feed the media's hunger for immediacy by allowing them to do polls and report "instantaneous" voting results.
Are we so impatient and with such short attention spans that we can't wait just a few days for the correct results from one of the most important decisions facing our country?!!!
I'd rather have it done right than just done quickly to appease a small portion of our society (the media and political junkies).

In a recent poll it was determined that 1% of the Diebold voting machines admitted that they are thinking of letting themselves be manipulated by democrats. Apparently, the machines were disgusted with the Foley scandal.
