you choose it when it's purchased.

.com, .net, .info., .biz, etc....general for commerce

.org.....generally for non-profits

.mil, .gov....restricted to military/government

edit to updated question: unfortunately, there is no extension specifically for a restaurant. therefore, one of the commerce options above would be the best choice. stats show most search under the .com extension; therefore, i would recommend this first. yields higher hit ratios. good luck and best wishes!

You! You have a choice as to what you want for the extension to a certain degree. .gov .edu etc are specialized extensions. You wont get them unless your site pertains to the extension.

you do a domain search to see if that name is already taken if not you can use it if it is it gives you a choice of others it is also determined by what country region ect ect

whatever name you register is the name that gets setup. you can register under several different suffixes, too, if you want.
