I recently bought a car from a friend, but now the car squeals very loud evrytime you start it. The squealing stops after about 5 minutes, but it is really loud and annoying. What is it, and how can I stop it?

my girlfriend has an 02 kia sportage. it seemed to
squeal a lot and continued getting worse as time went by. she asked the dealer, and they said it
was notorious for the belts to squeal at relatively
low mileage. they wanted $150.00 to replace all
3 belts. i bought all 3 at a napa store for about $30.00. then i spent about 2.5 hours replacing them. if i had had a hoist to lift it with it would have been much easier. but after doing it i decided that
$150.00 wasn't that far out of line to have them do it. good luck.

Sounds like the engine accessorie drive belts.

If the engine uses a serpentine belt ( a single wide belt that drives all of the accessories), that belt needs to be replaced. These belts usually use an automatic tensioner and can not be adjusted. There is also an idler pulley on the belt tensioner. The bearing in this pulley tends of go bad with age. Inspect this pulley. With the engine off, see if you can rock the pulley from side to side. If you can, replace the tensioner when you replace the belt

If the engine uses the older style fan belts, multiple narrower V belts, the belts may need to be adjusted. V belts usually need to be manually adjusted. Find the longest span between the pulleys. You shouldn't be able to move the belt more than 1/4".

A loose belt may become glazed. Shiny on the surfaces where it contacts the pulley. Best to replace the belt if it becomes glazed.

You can try belt dressing on the belts. This can be purchased at any auto parts store. This is only a band-aid fix that will temporarily stop the belts from squealing. Best to do a more permanent fix and replace a worn belt.

Let's hope it is just a loose fan belt an idler pulley bearing, or maybe a water pump bearing.

Most likely a loose or worn belt or tensioner.

Possibly a worn/cracked serpentine belt. You can inspect and change it yourself.

you either have a loose fan belt, or one about to break, try to tighten it up and if that doesn't do it, get a new one
